Here Comes Santa Claus by Bing Crosby and The Andrew Sisters

Hello there!

I am opting out of a formal post today. Lots of things to do... one being that I have a maternity session this afternoon and have to focus on that. Two... Christmas "things" that I have been neglecting to do need my attention.

See you tomorrow!

Silent Night by Mercy Me and Amy Grant

Went to the SU Basketball game this afternoon.
The kids are part of the SU Kid's Club and got free tickets. Also they got to have there picture taken with "Otto" the Orange on the court after the game. We went with my Dad and had a nice time.

Sam keeping score and stats in his journal.

I am trying to make a better effort of getting my photo taken with the kids. Monkey arm shooting is usually how it happens.

Sleigh Ride by Harry Connick, Jr.

We have had some mild weather in the past few weeks but I decided that today, the day the NorEaster came, to decorate outside.
I wasn't going to decorate outside this year but had been talked into by Sam.
My mom picked up Beth today for another "shopping trip".... God help us!
I took the opportunity to just bite the bullet and get it done.
It's done.
Everyone is happy.

As you can see, he was a BIG help.... (playing in the snow and all.)

P.S. Incidentally 'Sleigh Ride', in almost every version, is my all time favorite Christmas song. There is just so much happiness to it.

Baby, It's Cold Outside by Doris Day & Bing Crosby

As if she needed any more encouragement towards DIVA status,
my mom shows up with this faux fur coat.
Yes, it's Beth.
Yes, she loves it.
Yes, I know that she is only 3 for a little while longer.
and Yes... it's white and dry clean only!
Thanks Mom.

I'll Be Home For Christmas by Michael Buble

The holidays are always a little bittersweet for those who have lost a loved one.
Brian's grandfather, Joe, was a very important person in his life. A few years ago, he lost a relatively quick battle with cancer just a few months after his wife past away. Grandpa Joe was as stubborn and ornery as they come but ALWAYS showed his love towards Brian... and I.
We have many reminders of him through out our home, including this photo that hangs all year. It was taken December 7, 1937 in Vermont. Grandpa is the one getting a snowball smashed in his face! We were told by his sister Ann, that this photo was actually taken by a photographer for the local newspaper.
It is truly one of my favorite photos that we own.
It's hard to imagine that only 5 short years later, with his mother's signature, he joined the Navy at 17 years old and began his tours through the South Pacific.
A carefree innocence gone.
The photo of him as a smiling kid is a real gift.

Mary and Steve Wedding Day 1939

Always in the back of my mind the holiday season is clouded a bit. My grandmother, Mary, past away New Years Eve 2001. My grandfather, Steve, died the day after Christmas 2006. Their passings were quite significant to us because it also meant the end of an era, so to speak. My grandfather was the last to go from that generational group. With the sale of their house it was a goodbye to the 30+  years of memories for me and literally a lifetime of memories for my father. Christmas was always a special time with them driving up to my dad's house and spending Christmas morning with them. I thankfully have the last few with them recorded on video to look back at someday. I try not to drive myself crazy thinking of how much my grandmother would have ADORED being with her great grandchildren.

Ok- so now you can guess I am in a sentimental mood today. It was probably all the talking about Christmas cookies from yesterday. It may be because my father's birthday was yesterday too and I wonder how that must feel not to receive a birthday call or card from either parent anymore. Or maybe it's because every time I pick up my camera I think of them. It was upon my grandfather's death that I was gifted a small fund to do whatever I wanted with it.
I bought my camera.

My last lengthy visit with him  was at my house accompanied with hundreds of old family photos. We spent the entire day writing on the backs of as many as we could.  At the end of the day he asked me if I would hold on to them for "a little while."Although his death was relatively unexpected to us, I believe that he knew that the inevitable change was nearer to him.  I didn't realize at the time that he had been giving them to me. He was entrusting them to me.
What. A. Gift.

Last but not least.... Nick.
Sam insisted that we put up Nick's stocking this year. So there it hangs.
I have not read 'Marley and Me' yet. Truthfully, I'm scared to.
Nick took a back seat to the kids once they were born. I have many regrets to the way I treated him his last few years. There so many times I wanted to kill him.... muddy paw prints all over a clean floor, the hundreds of socks I would find vomited up on the rug (nearly every morning), the never ending barking, and dog hair on EVERYTHING! He had been demoted, big time, by me.  The kids on the other hand adored him.
He was their big brother.
When he left us this past May is when I fully understood what his role and position had been with in this family. Time has definitely been healing but it is an emptiness that we all still feel to this day. Someday we'll welcome a new dog to love and make memories with... but it will not diminish Nick's gift of 11 years of crazy memories from our cocoa bean.

Jingle Bells by Barbra Streisand

I absolutely despise, without a doubt, Christmas cookie making. I am not a baker by nature and I feel sorry for my kids who will have to miss out on this time honored tradition. At times I almost feel as though I am betraying my grandmother by not picking up where she left off. She would show up at our house with tupperware and tins FULL of cookies. Many different varieties at that. As kids we never thought anything of it. We almost expected her to bring them... and she never disappointed us. Yummy! :)
I have all of her cookie recipes. I have made some before. Do I want to do it again? Not really. I would have to be in a real sentimental mood to do so.
It is so much work! And yes, the reward is worth it but I just don't have the time or patience for it. So I am calling on my siblings to channel their inner Grandma Lesko in them. There's got to be a baker within our group somewhere???
Laura?... Rachel??.... Patrick???(haha... could you imagine that?).... Luke???? (oopps... I mean Danielle?)
;)
~
Because guilt runs a majority of my life, I decided to come up with the "non cookie baking mom" solution. I bought a pizzelle press. I have been churning out dozens of cookies the last few evenings. They are relatively easy and fast. I also found that I can edit photos and bake cookies at the same time. Now how's that for multi-tasking?
Towers of pizzelle will replace the 60 chocolate cakes that I usually make every December.
Sam refers to them as The Leaning Towers of Pizzelle.
I can't keep their little hands off of them!

Kristin, as I return your bundt pan to you I will also be dropping off my kids so that they can make cut outs with you. Weirdly, in some masochistic way, you find it enjoyable!?!

Let It Snow! by Harry Connick Jr.

It's finally starting to feel like Christmas time.
We had some blustery, blizzardy (is that even a word?) weather yesterday.
It can be a very comforting time of year. I love seeing the blanket of snow on the ground while I am warm and toasty inside. It's like it is a big white goose down comforter, full of insulation. It's a time of year that my "large SUV owning" guilt melts away. Winters in CNY can be brutal. I believe we are in the top 5 "snowiest" parts of the country.
I even like that it starts getting dark by 4:30 or 5pm. I know call me crazy...
In the summer and fall we take advantage of the longer days and our lives are full throttle for months. Wintertime is mother nature's little whisper in our ears to "slow down" a bit.
I love the hibernating feeling that comes over me.

All our favorite winter activities are just upon us. Sledding, snowmen building, snow forts and fights, snowmobiling, snowboarding, shoveling (yes, Sam likes to shovel). Since I didn't have a blog until May, here are some images of what was going at the beginning of 2008.

Luke and Danielle bought Sam a snowboard for Christmas last year.
He is a natural and after a few casual lessons from Kristin A. he did great!!!
He has been driving us crazy since we came home from the beach that he wants to go snowboarding again. It's hard for him to be patient. We did get a little bit of snow a couple of weeks ago and Brian took him to a much bigger hill. He did great again and acted as if he didn't just have a 9 month sabbatical from the sport.

I will admit that winter time is a little more complicated since having kids but it's still a time that I look forward to.

Let it snow!
